MICHAEL PHELAN / LONDONThe US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA has conducted flight tests of an unsteady active flow control system on the Bell XV-15 experimental tiltrotor that promises dramatic reductions in downl adidas campus oad forces during hovering. The tests, conducted under DARPA s Micro Adaptive Flow Control MAFC programme, demonstrated that the technology can provide a 14% reduction in download forces on the airframe during hover by controlling the flow of air around the wing. The technology is intended to enable control of large-scale aerodynamic flows using adaptive control techniques with small-scale actuators, such as synthetic micro-jets, micro-electromechanical systems MEMS -based actuators, pulsed-blowing, combustion actuators and smart structu owala ca res. The XV-15 demonstration used small synthetic jets to delay flow separation. DARPA says the tests show that using MAFC, a 25,000kg 55,000lb tiltrotor can carry about 450kg more payload.The goal of the MAFC programme is to demonstrate military applications and develop design software to enable the technology to be used in new aircraft designs. Meggitt Defence Systems has secured a follow-on order from France s DGA procurement agency to supply at least 110 Banshee subsonic target drones over the next five years, extending a deal under which the UK company has already delivered more than 260 of the air vehicles since 2000. First deliveries under the new contract - a value for which has not been disclosed - will be made this year, and all 110 targets will be delivered by late 2008 for operation by France s CEL and CELM ranges, says Meggitt. Paris h dunk panda as also placed options under the five-year deal to place additional Banshee orders from 2009, says Teresa Horton, the company s director of marketing and sales. Meggitt also recently delivered a further batch of 17 Banshee target systems to an undisclosed Asian customer, with the user having conducted a two-week training exercise earlier this year which culminated with seven of the air vehicles airborne simultaneously, says Horton.
