Estonias bid to join the common currency by the end of the year received support from the European Parliaments economic and monetary affairs committee on 2 June. In contrast to other eurozone members, Estonia has been a shining example of prudent fiscal policy, said Sharon Bowles, the committees head. On 7 June, the eurozone finance ministers gave their blessing. The issue will now go before the summit of EU leaders on 17 June. Finance ministers will take the final decision on 13 July. Estonia is an economic pipsqueak. Its gross domestic product is, at 鈧?4 billion, less than 1% of the EUs. On a quantitative level, its membership of the eurozone does not strengthen the common currencys credibility the way that, say, an application from Sweden or Denmark would. Nor does it weaken it. If Estonia suddenly collapsed, the cost of a bail-out would be tiny in comparison to the hundreds of billions of euros that would have to be spent on propping up the troubled southern European countries.
